The New Orleans Pelicans’ poor injury luck is continuing.
The team announced Thursday night that Dante Cunningham was diagnosed with a non-displaced right proximal fibula fracture, an injury suffered on Wednesday versus Memphis. He’s expected to be sidelined four-to-six weeks, a gut wrenching blow to a Pelicans team just starting to gain some momentum with a four-game win streak.
Cunningham was injured on a play against the Grizzlies after playing just 12 minutes in the contest.
Cunningham, who’s in his eighth professional season, has given coach Alvin Gentry a reliable floor-spacing presence this season. Perimeter shooting has been an issue for New Orleans, with Cunningham being one of the only three-point threats on the roster so far, shooting an outstanding 41% from deep.
Cunningham, 29, has played in 15 games with the Pelicans this season, holding per-game averages of 5.6 points, 3.9 rebounds and 0.5 assists in 23.5 minutes.
He’s in his third season with the Pelicans, and only missed one game last season. Cunningham has never played less than 60 games in an NBA season. After suffering an injury like this, one must wonder if his luck has finally vanished.
