A shining light within the world of music, style, and culture has dimmed his light one final time.
On the morning of Tuesday, October 14, 2025, the family of Eugene Michael Archer, better known as D’Angelo, announced the passing of the legendary singer after a bout with pancreatic cancer.
“The shining star of our family has dimmed his light for us in this life,” the family wrote in a statement to Variety. “After a prolonged and courageous battle with cancer, we are heartbroken to announce that Michael D’Angelo Archer, known to his fans around the world as D’Angelo, has been called home, departing this life today, October 14th, 2025. We are saddened that he can only leave dear memories with his family, but we are eternally grateful for the legacy of extraordinarily moving music he leaves behind. We ask that you respect our privacy during this difficult time, but invite you all [to] join us in mourning his passing while also celebrating the gift of song that he has left for the world.”
D’Angelo was and is one of the greatest musicians of the modern age, producing iconic albums like Brown Sugar and hits like “Lady.” Through his career, he earned 14 GRAMMY nominations, sold more than four million records, and collaborated with fellow critically-acclaimed acts Lauryn Hill, Erykah Badu, and many others. He has influenced modern-day musicians, ranging from Anderson .Paak and H.E.R. to Childish Gambino and The Weeknd.
D’Angelo leaves behind three children, one of whom he shared with Angie Stone, who passed away earlier this year. He was 51 years old.
