Portland Trail Blazers point guard Damian Lillard seemingly threw a bit of shade at Kevin Durant today, when he said that he has “too much pride” to join a “super team” on an interview with SiriusXM NBA Radio today. Here’s the full quote, as transcribed by Nick Schwartz of Fox Sports:
“If somebody wants to go join people and do that… then, you know, it’s not against the rules. They can do it. There’s just more pressure to win when you do it. Some people say ‘aw, they just joining up, they had to do this to win it,’ but we play the game to win it. So when people do it, that’s they decision.
I wouldn’t do it. That’s just not who I am. I might have too much pride for that, or be too much of a competitor where I couldn’t bring myself to do it. It also makes it more fun. You know, you get to take a monster down, and that’s always fun.”
Six years ago, Durant voiced a similar opinion:
Now everybody wanna play for the heat and the Lakers? Let's go back to being competitive and going at these peoples!

Obviously, KD’s views have changed since then. Hopefully, Lillard doesn’t follow Durant’s lead and change his mind a few years down the road, joining a super team. If he does, these comments will be thrown back in his face, just as Durant’s old tweet has been thrown back in his plenty of times since he announced his intent to sign with the Golden State Warriors.
