Everyone is expecting the Cowboys to part ways with Tony Romo this offseason but today we got a clearer picture of how this storyline might play out. According to Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports, the Cowboys are expected to try to trade Romo rather than flat out releasing him.
“The Cowboys will listen to offers for Tony Romo, sources said, once owner Jerry Jones has his meeting with the Pro Bowl quarterback. Romo prefers to be moved to a contending team — specifically, the Texans, Cardinals, Broncos and Chiefs”.
La Canfora also added the Bills but they haven’t solved the Tyrod Taylor situation. You can understand why Dallas would want to extract an asset for Romo instead of getting nothing for him. Romo will cost about $20 million in dead money for extracting Romo off of the roster. Dallas can split the cost in half by making him a June 1st cut but it really doesn’t make much sense to get rid of Romo considering the $5 million it would save them by releasing Romo would be used up by paying a backup quarterback anyway.
I’m interested to see what teams will actually pursue Romo. The Texans and Broncos have already made it clear that they will not pursue Romo trades. The Cardinals and Chiefs already have veteran quarterbacks in place so the landing spot for Romo remains very unclear.
