GAME OF THE DAY: Dallas Cowboys vs Philadelphia Eagles Preview

  • November 11, 2018

Make Picks With GameOn For A Chance To Win Up To $1k!

Even when teams aren’t exactly Super Bowl contenders, the NFC East just has a way of being entertaining. Every team in the division has a distinct storyline that every NFL fan can find interesting. As far as this game, the jury’s still out on whether Philadelphia can make a run to get back in the playoffs. Dallas’ season, on the other hand, is close to done. Or at least feels like it is. At 3-5, anything short of winning out puts them in danger of missing the playoffs once again. For exactly those reasons, the Eagles should run away with this one.

Featured Pick #1: Who will score the Eagles first touchdown? (Golden Tate)

There’s a problem at running back for Philadelphia. Corey Clement has struggled. Wendell Smallwood isn’t exactly the second coming of Jim Brown, and pretty much everyone else is hurt. At wideout, Alshon Jeffery has been efficient (his catch rate this season is a career-high 65.9%, per Pro-Football-Reference), but this will still be just his sixth game played this season. Jeffery does have four touchdowns in those five games played, but Golden Tate is too tempting to pass up with this pick. Especially since the GameOn app has a Tate touchdown worth 625 points. That’s the same as longshot pick Wendell Smallwood, but less than no touchdown scored or the field (everyone besides Tate, Smallwood, Jeffery, and Zach Ertz).

The Eagles need weapons. Tate is one of the best, really. His ability to make would-be tacklers miss is uncanny among wideouts. Philadelphia also has one of the most creative play callers and designers in head coach Doug Peterson and his staff. Getting a new toy in Tate at this point in the season is a godsend. And what better way to welcome him to his new squad than to get him the ball with an opportunity to get into the end zone?

As a member of the Lions, Tate had his best game of the season against this same Cowboys team. In the Week 4 matchup, Tate went off for eight catches (on eight targets) for 132 yards and two touchdowns. He probably wasn’t expecting to get another chance to torch the Cowboys secondary. But, via the trade, he gets exactly that.

Featured Pick #2: In the second half, what will be the Cowboys first drive outcome? (Punt)

Dallas has been struggling for most of the season, but especially lately. Furthermore, their performance in the second half of games has been even worse. Dating back to the beginning of the season, here’s how the Cowboys have fared the first time they got the ball to start the second half:

Week 9: Fumble/Turnover

Week 8: Bye

Week 7: Punt

Week 6: Punt

Week 5: Touchdown

Week 4: Punt

Week 3: Punt

Week 2: Field Goal

Week 1: Punt

It’s not the most intriguing pick, but if you pick anything other than a Dallas punt to start the second half, you’re really tempting the Football Gods. Philadelphia has a stout defense up front. Ezekiel Elliott might struggle. And Dak Prescott is reeling. They made an effort to get Amari Cooper involved last week – and should continue to do so – but coming out the half, Philly should make some adjustments to take Elliott and Cooper out as much as possible.

Unless you happen to think this is the week Dallas figures something out and (finally) clicks on offense, take the smart play. The pick that their history this season is begging you to take. There’s picks to go out on a limb to try and get those extra points, and then there are smart picks. Take the smart one here.

Featured Pick #3: Who will win the game? (Eagles 13+)

It feels like the wheels have come off for the Dallas Cowboys. At this point, Jason Garrett is coaching for his job and Dak Prescott is playing for his. (Although, to be fair, we’ve been here before – a few times – with Garrett, so who knows how short his leash really is).

Philadelphia, meanwhile, is playing to get back in the playoff hunt. They’re almost there. They made an aggressive trade at the deadline to get Golden Tate from Detroit and they’re also getting Alshon Jeffrey back healthy. While they’ve been decimated by injury at the running back position, their weapons at wideout might be enough to make up for it.

Dallas shouldn’t be short on motivation even though their playoff hopes going down faster than Jerry Jones’ glass of Johnnie Walker Blue. The Cowboys are playing for their jobs, for contracts, for pride. But that also produces selfish play. Which seems about right, right? Dallas isn’t playing like a team right now. Look for Philly to jump out in front early and often.
