When the Dallas Cowboys signed Henry Melton coming off an ACL injury last offseason, he was given a one year deal that had an option to turn into three years. Melton underwhelmed last season only netting 15 tackles, 5 sacks, and three starts before being deactivated for the playoffs. Had the Cowboys decided to pick up Melton’s option he would have gotten $24 million over three years and nine million dollars in 2015. Melton’s contract was specifically designed with this option to help make cap space should the team decide to go in a different direction. With Dez Bryant and DeMarco Murray coming to the end of contract years the Cowboys are looking to lighten the load in any way possible after years of overspending.
