Harriet Tubman is one of the most iconic figures in American history (rightfully so), yet she is rarely personified in Television and Film. Cynthia Erivo is about to change that in the Kasi Lemmons’ historical biopic, Harriet.
The film is directed by Kasi Lemmons, also known for her work in Silence of the Lambs, and first began development in 2016. Initially, Seith Mann (Elementary) has since been attached to direct rom a script by Gregory Allen Howard (Remember the Titans) but Lemmons was announced as director later on. Shortly after, Erivo was attached to the role and now we get our first look at her as Harriet Tubman. (Photos via Focus Features):

As I said before the story of Harriet Tubman is one that’s known by many. She was a slave turned abolitionist who founded the underground railroad and saved millions of others from slavery in the South by helping them get to the North. However, there is a big portion of Tubman’s story that many don’t know. Even after her work with the Underground Railroad, Tubman was a scout and a spy for the Union Army during the American Civil War and later became involved in politics, helping advocating for women’s rights.
Tubman is a true American hero in every sense of the word and hopefully, Lemmons film will help bring to light the parts of Tubman’s life that are rarely talked about.
