Craig Sager’s battle with cancer is well-known among NBA fans. The TNT sideline reporter was diagnosed with a form of leukemia in 2014 and has had an ongoing struggle to beat the disease. Most recently, it was revealed that the timeline to live would be incredibly short for a person not getting treatment, leaving many to worry about the health of the long-time member of the NBA family, despite his claims that he is receiving the best care in the world.
But Sager has received support from across the league with players, coaches and the commissioner lending words of love to him. What Sager has gone through is incredibly hard to imagine and it appears that his efforts to battle the disease are just as difficult of a concept to grasp.
In a fantastic feature on Sager from Sports Illustrated’s Lee Jenikins (which everyone should read the entirety of), Sager’s doctor has strong words about what the 64-year-old has been able to manage:
Friends freaked in March when Sager told HBO’s Real Sports he had been given three-to-six months to live, but that was the prognosis for a patient without treatment, and he is receiving the best care available. “A patient who battles this past a year is amazing,” says his doctor, Naveen Pemmaraju. “What he’s done is almost miraculous.”
Miraculous.
While many rightfully worry about Sager and how much longer he will be in our views, the man has continued to fight and provide inspiration to everyone. What he is doing is incredible, receiving around the clock treatment while still managing to perform his job on the sidelines during the playoffs.
Craig has continued his fight with leukemia despite the odds being against him. He has done so with a smile on his face and colorful suits on his body. He has already inspired us and made us appreciate his greatness.
Now it’s time for him to kick cancer’s ass one more time.
