Tony Romo has recently been placed on the Dallas Cowboys injured reserve/designated to return list or ‘IR-Boomerang’. It doesn’t officially end Romo’s season but it does limit how much participation Romo will have going forward. He won’t be able to practice until after week 6 and he won’t be able to take the field until at least week 8.
So, with the Cowboys short on quarterbacks, they had to make a move to either get a potential starter in Romo’s absence or a backup for Brandon Weeden. In comes former Buffalo Bills quarterback Matt Cassel.

Dallas traded for Bills quarterback Matt Cassel on Tuesday, NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported, according to a source informed for the move. The Bills sent a 2017 seventh-round pick to the Cowboys for a 2017 fifth-round pick as well, NFL Media’s Albert Breer reported, according to a Cowboys team source.
Cassel spent the entire offseason battling for the starting spot in Buffalo, but was ultimately beaten out by Tyrod Taylor. Cassel went into the summer as the favorite to take the job, but did not outperform the more versatile and careful Taylor who has performed well this season under new head coach Rex Ryan.
Cassel’s big break in the NFL came in 2008 when Tom Brady missed the entire season due to injury and Cassel stepped in to try to perform in Brady’s absence. It was Cassel’s last season with the Pats and he had a solid year in his first season as an NFL quarterback. He led New England to a 10-5 record as a starter, throwing 21 touchdowns, 11 interceptions and 3,693 yards. His best season as a pro came when he was a member of the Kansas City Chiefs in 2010 when he was selected for the Pro Bowl after he threw for 3,116 yards, 27 touchdowns and 7 interceptions.
