Many fans and media members had said that Chris Algieri would pose the toughest test for welterweight contender Conor Benn. If that was the case, Benn paid it no mine. In what appeared to be a competitive fight early on, Benn landed a two-punch combination that sent the former title challenger to the canvas in the fourth round. As fans cheered, Algieri struggled to get to his feet and beat the count. Ultimately, Benn was awarded the stoppage and notched the 20th win of his promising career.
After the fight came to a close, Benn told reporters that he is now looking to challenge for a title in 2022. He noted Adrien Broner, current champion Yordenis Ugas and the winner of Amir Khan-Kell Brook as potential opponents in his next bout. Regardless of who he fights, he is aiming to ascend the divisional rankings, earn a title and make a splash in the United States.
“I hope the yanks now know that number one, I’m the best fighter in Britain. And number two, I’m coming for them,” he said, according to Michael Benson.
With prospects like Vergil Ortiz and Jared Ennis along with champions like Terence Crawford and Errol Spence Jr., Benn has a number of big time fights on the table as he progresses in his career.
