Members of the U.S. House of Representatives and U.S. Senate have moved to certify the results of the most recent presidential election. President-Elect Joseph R. Biden emerged with 302 electoral college votes and President Donald J. Trump fell to second-place with 232 electoral college votes.
Congress certified the results of the most recent presidential election amid chaos on Capitol Hill. The process of certifying the results of the election was scheduled to begin Wednesday morning. As lawmakers began debating the results, rioters began storming the nation’s capital in support of the President. Supporters of the President ultimately broke into Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s office and ran onto the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives. Thus far, four have died and more than 50 have been arrested.

With chaos unfolding nearby, the President issued a number of tweets before having his account locked for 12 hours. He did not condemn the rioters, but rather called for people to respect law enforcement. Many members of his party did not believe that he handled the situation in a presidential or even competent manner.
“There is no question that the president formed the mob, the president incited the mob, the president addressed the mob,” Rep. Liz Cheney said.
“He lit the flame!”
As events continue to unfold in the nation’s capital, Congress continues to move forward. President-Elect Joe Biden and Vice President-Elect Kamala Harris are set to be inaugurated on January 20.
