“Colin Trevorrow is going write and direct the third Jurassic World story,” executive producer Steven Spielberg told EW. Spielberg will return to an executive producer on the third installment as well.
Trevorrow was the director of 2015’s surprise hit Jurrasic World. He also co-wrote the film, which went on to pull in $1.67 billion at the worldwide box office and the highest grossing weekend opening for a film until Star Wars: The Force Awakens surpassed it later that year. Trevorrow returned to co-write the sequel Jurrasic World: Fallen Kingdom which is being directed by J.A. Bayona.
Trevorrow will work with Emily Carmichael on the script for the third installment of the rebooted franchise. Carmichael worked on the script for Pacific Rim: Uprising.
Producers Frank Marshall and Pat Crowley will also be back for the third film.
While Trevorrow wasn’t in the director’s chair for The Fallen Kingdom, he did praise Bayona’s work on the film. “It’s important to this franchise that we welcome new creative voices to keep our storytelling fresh and alive. I’m thrilled with the tension and beauty J.A. has brought to Fallen Kingdom, and I know Emily will add another layer of emotion to the concluding chapter of our trilogy.”
Jurrasic World: The Fallen Kingdom is set to release June 22. The third film will likely be released sometime a few years down the road.
