Colin Kaepernick and J. Cole are what modern day black leaders look like.
Darren Rovell of ESPN tweeted out that Kaep donated $34,000 to Cole’s Dreamville Foundation. The money will go toward different projects currently in development, though no specifics were given.
This donation is a part of Kaepernick’s pledge to donate $1 million to various charities and causes. To date, Kaep has donated $800,000 of that goal. The most notable donations have been the food and water aid to Somalia and the donation of suits to former prisoners.
J. Cole has been known throughout his career as a “woke” rapper with songs like “Love Yourz” and “Mo Money.” More recently, Cole spoke out in favor of Kaep at a show in Baltimore, MD.
Cole on the Ravens possibly signing Kaepernick:
“Baltimore, the shit that’s happening here, don’t you think that somebody should risk their whole livelihood and their whole life to talk about this shit? Even if it cost them their money, their job, their life? Don’t that sound like Colin Kaepernick? Don’t that sound like what he doing? And he trying to come to Baltimore, the city that seems to need that shit for real.”
More athletes and entertainers could learn from Kaep and Cole. They are using their platform to effect positive change and aren’t just offering lip service. As much as I want Kaepernick to get an opportunity in the NFL, I’d much rather this work. Salute to these two.
