Team USA head coach Mike Krzyzewski and Kobe Bryant have one of the best relationships in basketball. Kobe respects Coach K so much that Kobe recruited him in 2004 to become the Lakers head coach. Dwight Howard didn’t even get that treatment. The two have shared a bond for many years, which lead to a phone call this year about Kobe joining team USA. From Arash Markazi of ESPN.
Kobe played for team USA in 2008 and 2012 bringing home the gold in both years. Kobe’s last night in the NBA was magical and it’s probably the right call to end his career on that night, but it would have been dope to see him play on Team USA one more time.
