The Clippers may not trade Jamal Crawford anytime soon but they are getting rid of one of their reserve guards in the form of Jared Cunningham.
From Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports:
The Clippers have been working to clear roster space to explore more potential deals to improve their bench, league sources said.
Trading Cunningham spares the Clippers a cap hit. If they would’ve waived him, he would’ve counted against the cap based on the number of days he had been with the team.
It is unlikely the Sixers will keep Cunningham, who needs to be waived by Wednesday afternoon to avoid guaranteeing the balance of his $915,000 salary for the 2014-15 season.
Cunningham is a FANTASTIC dunker and super athletic. The Cavaliers took him with the No. 24 pick in the 2012 draft and then was traded to the Dallas Mavericks on draft day. Since then the Mavs, Atlanta Hawks, Sacramento Kings and now the Los Angeles Clipper have all but gave up on his development. The Sixers will most likely be releasing Cunningham and will most likely send a protected second round pick to Los Angeles.
Cunningham is young and still relatively raw. He can’t handle the ball very well or even shoot very well but he does have time to develop. Cunningham will hopefully get a chance with an underperforming team who might like to develop him, like the New York Knicks, Minnesota Timberwolves or Utah Jazz. Hopefully an athletic guy like Cunningham can find a way to make it with some team.
For now, enjoy a Cunningham slam.
