In today’s climate, Ciara’s name often comes up in relation to her tumultuous relationship with Future, her marriage with Russell Wilson or Instagram videos of her doing the “In My Feelings” challenge. It’s as if the next generation may never know who Ciara is an artist. Before giving birth to a child with Future or marrying an NFL quarterback, Ciara was one of the hottest artists coming out of Atlanta. With records like “Goodies”, “Body Party”, “Ride” and “1, 2 Step”, Ciara solidified herself as a dancer, performer and all around entertainer. However, recent events have distracted the public from her music and ability to perform. This week, Ciara has attempted to remind us that she still knows how to put together a record.
Ciara has released her first single since signing with Warner at the top of 2017, “Level Up”. While the song’s title reminds fans of a controversial social media post sometime ago, the song itself is a uptempo and positive. Ciara’s attempt at a crossover Jersey Club, Baltimore Club mashup is reminiscent of the sound she has been known for. On the song, Ciara sings, “No loses, just upgrading/My lessons made blessings/I turn that into money.” Overall, the song is solid, but comes across as a weak attempt to emulate the sound of Jersey and Baltimore Club. Check out the new single above.
