Probably the only bright spot in Indiana’s controversial Religious Freedom Restoration Act is the approval of The First Church of Cannabis. Church founder Bill Levin told ABC 7 that he founded the church in late March after the bill was passed “since religion is governing this state.”
The Devil’s Lettuce is currently illegal for recreational and medicinal use in Indiana. Conversely, the church may euro-step prosecution since the RFRA limits the government from intervening with a person’s religious practices.
The church already has a sizable following, garnering over 19,000 likes on its Facebook page.
“In my mind’s eye, I thought I’d get 200-300 people from Indiana. I have to think different now. I didn’t realize I was going to have the most popular religion in the country,” Levin said.
As of now Levin is looking for a location to house his congregation, and also plans to move forward with the church regardless of the possible changes made to the legislature it was birthed under.
