Annapurna Pictures dropped the first trailer for their upcoming film Vice, based on the life of former US Vice-President Dick Cheney. The film stars Christian Bale, who is almost unrecognizable as Cheney. Sam Rockwell, Amy Adams, and Steve Carell will also star, playing former President George W. Bush, Lynne Cheney, and Donald Rumsfield, respectively.
The trailer gives a small window into the breadth of the film, which will likely cover most of Cheney’s adult life. It also sets up Cheney as a ruthless political negotiator and tactician as he negotiates his role with Bush. The trailer itself is heavily stylized for a political biopic, The Killers’ The Man, plays throughout the entirety of the trailer. This is certainly a different approach from the norm such as these films are usually drenched in melodrama. While this film will obviously contain melodramatic moments, hopefully, director Adam McKay can breathe new life into the genre.
