The Marvel Universe is close to making some key roster changes. The core Avengers heroes — Ironman (Robert Downey, Jr.), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), and Captain America (Chris Evans) are deep in their tenure with their own solo movies and now two Avengers installments.
Chris Evans is approaching his fifth appearance as Steve Rogers in Captain America: Civil War, which hits theaters next year. Evans confirmed with Collider that he is under contract for six movies with Marvel, effectively ending his run as the Captain after Avengers: Infinity War Part 2 in 2019. He also confirmed that if Marvel is open to a contract extension, then he’s all for it:
“Listen, if Marvel wants me they got me. I’ve never had such a relationship where you have such – I mean look at my resume, I’m used to being on set being like, ‘Ah is this movie gonna be terrible?’ Marvel just can’t stop making great movies, they do it in their sleep. It’s wonderful directors and producers and actors and scripts, and it’s like a playground as an actor.”
Evans also spoke on his initial hesitancy to even accept the role as Captain America:
“It’s so mind-boggling that I was so tentative in the beginning to jump onboard. What an asshole I would be if I hadn’t done this. I mean can you imagine? Kicking myself – I’d never forgive myself!”
And now the thought of hanging up the shield isn’t appealing to Evans at all, as he told Entertainment Tonight while promoting his directorial debut film, Before We Go:
“It’s almost terrifying to think about these being done. It always feels so good to kind of wrap and just say, ‘Alright, one more down.’ But it’s also kind of like high school in a sense. You keep looking to when you’re going to be done, and we’re almost done now, and you’re not quite ready for it to be over.”
What has to be considered in regards to Evans’ potential contract extension is the fate of Captain America in the next few films. There’s no guarantee, in fact it’s unlikely that the core Avengers are still the focal point for Marvel after Infinity War. They’ve started to shift some focus to other heroes such as Falcon, Ant-Man, The Winter Solider, Vision, and others like Black Panther, Captain Marvel, and a new Spider-Man.
Marvel’s further need for a Captain America is yet to be assured past Evans’ contract tenure, but if they need him, it sounds like Evans isn’t hesitating if an extension offer comes his way.
