Chip Kelly was successful in his collegiate coaching career, but he hasn’t had the same luck in the NFL. Kelly interviewed for an offensive coordinator job for the Jacksonville Jaguars, but they went in another direction. Is this the last chance he will get this year?
Chip was highly criticized in Philadelphia for his high turnover of players. When he was hired he demanded full power of the 53 man roster. At the time only three coaches had that kind of power. He got rid of pro bowl players Lesean Mccoy and Nick Foles for Kiko Alonso and Sam Bradford.
After winning the division in his first season as a head coach, Kelly’s team went downhill. He also got Demarco Murray in free agency and if there was ever a horrible move it was one. Murray is a downhill runner and in Chip’s system, you need a shifty back that can run left to right first.
In 2016 Chip was hired by the San Francisco 49ers and it went from a small storm to a full-blown disaster. The Niners went 2-14 on their way to being the worst team in the league. Kelly has not shown the ability to be consistent at all. While coaches get fired and then get hired by another team, it is pretty likely that Kelly won’t get another chance at a head coaching position.
The Eagles have tried to undo everything that Chip Kelly had done to them. It is crazy that they were so willing to just give him all the power to take it away.
Chip’s best chance for success might be going back to the college level. The peculiar and rough life of being a head coach.
