The Green Bay Packers have found a new running back. The Kansas City Star has reported that the Chiefs have dealt away Knile Davis to the Pack for a conditional late round pick. The conditional pick will likely be based around playing time.
The Packers were in desperate need of a backup runningback. Starter Eddie Lacy has been dealing with nagging ankle problems that have kept him limited all season. This past week James Starks underwent knee surgery that will keep him out for the next 4 weeks. Green Bay used wide receiver Ty Montgomery in that role for much of last week.
From Kansas City’s perspective, Davis has been in danger of being released for weeks. Davis, 25, was chosen in the 3rd round of the 2013 NFL Draft. He served as Jamaal Charles primary backup for his first two NFL seasons doing a pretty admirable job. With Charcandrick West and Spencer Ware taking away his spot, Davis didn’t seem to have a home in Kansas City anymore. Davis was the team’s return man last season but even that position has been swiped away by rookie Tyreek Hill.
Overall this seems to be a great trade for the Packers. Davis comes in for cheap and has a ton of potential. Going back to his college days I was extremely high on Knile Davis coming out of Arkansas. Don’t be surprised if he succeeds in Green Bay.
