The Kansas City Chiefs made two big decisions today, one (probably) influencing the other. With one year left on his contract, the Chiefs signed Head Coach Andy Reid to a contract extension. Not long after that, it was announced that Chiefs General Manager John Dorsey was fired. Original reports claimed that both parties agreed to part ways, but sources later confirmed the firing.

Chiefs and John Dorsey did not agree to part ways, per source. Chiefs dismissed John Dorsey, per source. Their decision.

Here’s Chiefs Owner Clark Hunt’s statement on the firing.
“I notified John that we would not be extending his contract beyond the 2017 season, and after consideration, we felt it was in his best interests and the best interests of the team to part ways now.”
The firing came as a shock to the NFL world. Read what NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport tweeted shortly after.
There are few news stories I can remember generating as many stunned, dumbfounded reactions as John Dorsey being out in KC. Very respected

Are you thinking what I’m thinking? Do these moves show that Reid and Dorsey did not get along and Reid was seen as more valuable? I’m sure there will be rumblings of that being the case.
Dorsey came on with the Chiefs back in January of ’13, just one week after Reid’s hiring. The Chiefs finished over .500 in every season under Dorsey.
As the Chiefs now search for a new general manager, Rapoport said the process will be like the past.
#Chiefs structure won’t change: Owner Clark Hunt will interview GM candidates — internal and external — and the person will report to Hunt

Twitter is already reporting possible replacements for Dorsey.
Other in-house candidate expected to interview for Chiefs’ GM job is their co-director of player personnel Brett Veach. https://t.co/HpuSVLPtuq

Amongst the Chiefs in-house GM candidates could be Mike Borgonzi. Profiles as a strong future GM with his pro and college background.

Dorsey is the third GM to be fired since last March, joining Doug Whaley with the Bills and Scot McCloughan with the Redskins.
Give it some time, I’m sure Dorsey will find another job in the near future.
