Jimmy Butler had a breakout season last year for Chicago, averaging 20 points, 5.8 rebounds, 3.3 assists, and 1.8 steals per game, while making the All-Star team for the first time in his career. Butler established himself as one of the best two-way players in the league, and needless to say, the Bulls want him to stick around. The team is doing all the can to keep Butler.
From Eric Pincus of BasketballInsiders:
The Chicago Bulls have given Jimmy Butler both a qualifying offer AND a max qualifying offer @BBallInsiders

Butler hasn’t accepted the deal yet, but the offer is in place. The maximum qualifying offer is for 5 seasons at full maximum salary.
There was a report that Jimmy Butler would be interested in signing a 1-year deal with the Los Angeles Lakers.
However, now that the Bulls have extended a maximum qualifying offer, he can’t sign a 1-year deal with another team(it would have to be for a minimum of 3 years with no option for the first 3 years).
