Chauncey Billups has been looked at as a future head coach since he was still playing in the NBA. The former NBA point guard was always known as a leader and teacher of the game.
Since retiring from professional basketball, Billups has taken a job as an analyst for ESPN. But despite his liking to that job, he has always had his eyes on a return to the NBA.
The prevailing reports and opinions have been that Billups would eventually take a job in a front office. The Denver Nuggets, one of the teams he played for, were rumored to be a candidate for such a job.
However, Billups may have some reservations about such a job. The current analyst joined The Vertical Podcast with Adrian Wojnarowski to speak about his future. In the podcast, he revealed that he took an interview with newly-hired Magic head coach Frank Vogel to join his staff. While he ended up not taking the job to stay closer to his family, Billups did reveal that he now has interest in someday coaching a team:
“I’ve talked about my future; most of the time it’s always kind of been front office stuff. But as I start to take a deeper dive into my future, I’ve opened my mind to the opportunity to coach because I know I’d like to make a day-to-day impact on guys, similar to how I was as a player when I led a lot of my teams. And kind of one of my fears of being in a front office, or one of my reservations, is that maybe I don’t have that day-to-day influence and impact on a guy.”
This is obviously a bit of a turn from previous reports about Chauncey Billups. But if his playing career showed us one thing, it’s that he has the potential to succeed as a coach whenever he makes the transition.
