NBA Hall of Famer and “Inside The NBA” analyst Charles Barkley has a new show coming out on TNT. It’s called “The Race Card” and it will focus on race relations in the United States. Barkley spoke about his show. Via Deadline.com:
“We as Americans never discuss the issue of race in this country, and how it impacts everything in our lives, until something bad happens,” Barkley said about the show. “I see this project as a way to talk about race, class and cultural differences and challenge everyone’s status quo.”
While race relations are certainly a massive issue in the U.S., Barkley may be a bit (or extremely) off when he says “we as Americans never discuss the issue of race in this country.” I don’t know which Americans you’re hanging out with Chuck, but discussions of racial tension is just about all that I see/hear in today’s society.
I appreciate Barkley trying to cast light on an issue that he believes is flying under the radar (even if it isn’t, at all), but I can’t see this show being any better than… terrible. Barkley is not exactly the sort of person that would be expected to eloquently lead a discussion on race relations, or anything else. He isn’t great at expressing himself verbally, nor is he known for having the most intelligent of opinions. I do wish Charles luck in his efforts, and perhaps something good will come out of his show. You never know.
