NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported Tuesday that wideout Keenan Allen underwent a procedure on Monday to repair a lacerated kidney, per a pair of sources. NFL Media’s Rand Getlin reports he is headed to injured reserve, according to a source briefed on the situation.
Allen suffered the injury during Sunday’s loss to the Ravens, stripping the Chargers of their leading receiver.
The third-year wideout has 67 catches this season which is second best in the NFL behind Atlanta Falcons wideout Julio Jones and he’s tied for the third most catches in NFL history over eight weeks behind Jones and Marvin Harrison.
Allen’s 725 yards and four touchdowns have been the driving force behing a huge year from Philip Rivers which has the Chargers currently leading the league in passing yards. Without Allen the Chargers will look to veteran receivers Stevie Johnson and Malcom Floyd and they will also look to two tight ends in Antonio Gates and Ladarius Green, who are both nursing injuries of their own.
