Chandler Parsons is heating up for the Dallas Mavericks. After starting the season on a minutes restriction and not being able to play to his full potential, Parsons has been the best player on the Dallas Mavericks since late January, and he is making his case to become a max contract level player, when he becomes a free agent in the offseason.
In his last 20 games, Parsons has been the definition of a complete player. He is averaging 19.2 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 2.7 assists per game. He has also been doing this very efficiently, shooting 53% from the field, 51% from the three-point line, and 79% from the free throw line. This play from Parsons has been great, but the Mavericks, as a team, have cooled off as he has caught fire. They are 10-10, in their last 20 games and currently only percentage points ahead of the Portland Trail Blazers in the Western Conference playoff standings.
He is scoring an average of 25.3 points per game over the Mavericks last four games but in those games, the Mavs are 3-1, with their only loss coming in a 104-101 heartbreaker to the Sacramento Kings.
Parsons has come into his game as of late and stats show he is much more than a scoring wing. At 6’9, Parsons can rebound well for a smaller forward and he also is one of the best passing forwards in the league. While he only averages 2.5 assists per game for the season, the numbers in fact do lie. In his last seven games, he is averaging 3.6 assists per game which would put him in the top 8 for small forwards in the assists per game category.
Parsons efficiency has been a major key to his success. He is the third best small forward from beyond the arc, shooting 42.3%, only behind Kawhi Leonard and Jared Dudley in 3pt percentage. He shoots the 5th best percentage from the field for small forwards at 49.9%. In front of him are only Giannis Antetokounmpo, LeBron James, Kevin Durant, and once again, Kawhi Leonard.
The numbers show just how impressive Parsons has been for the Dallas Mavericks since late January and he is the leading force keeping the Mavericks afloat right now. The good news for Dallas is that they have upped their play lately, winning four of their last six games.
The Mavericks are finally starting to play much better, just like Parsons has been doing for numerous weeks. Hopefully the success will translate into Parsons sticking around in Big D.
