Chance the Rapper was pulled over by police Sunday morning. The Chicago rapper went to record the traffic stop through Instagram Live so a record exists if something wrong happened.
Chance was in a vehicle with his child’s mother, Kirsten Corley, and their daughter, Kensli, driving from church. After the traffic stop is initiated, Chance pulls out his phone and goes to Instagram to begin livestreaming the incident “in case it gets out of hand,” he said.
The “No Problems” rapper uses his phone to zoom in on the police car in the beginning of the video. “I have great faith in humanity and the men and women that put on the badge,” he says in the video, then adding “you can’t be too careful.”
“But policing as a system is disproportionately racist and oppressive,” he continued. “I ain’t got no [gun] in the car, no drugs in the car. Nothing going on, just came back from church.”
The Chicago Sun-Times reports that the family was pulled over for a moving violation. The traffic stop ended with a warning.
Later that day, the livestream was taken down from Chance’s Instagram. However, the video of the incident is still spreading. Watch the livestream below:
Chance the Rapper has been outspoken about all things Chicago — from the school system to police brutality. While performing on Saturday Night Live with Kanye West in February 2016, Chance referenced the Laquan McDonald fatal shooting by Chicago Police in October 2014. “But people just please don’t forget about Jason Van Dyke / You can not mess with the light,” he rapped on-stage.
After Mike Pence left a NFL game Sunday because of players kneeling during the national anthem, the rapper questioned Pence on twitter about his thoughts on racism, police brutality and inequality.
Do you believe that there is such thing as police brutality, racial injustice or inequality in this country? I know you read this. https://t.co/CKxsAFTNW2
