Stan Lee is beloved for many reasons – X-Men, Iron Man, The Avengers, and Spider-Man, to name just a few – and now there’s one more reason to love the man. In 2011, the creative mastermind partnered with India’s Liquid Comics and its affiliate Graphic India to come up with his first ever Indian superhero – Chakra: The Invincible (The Hollywood Reporter).
Now, Lee’s POW! Entertainment will team up with Phantom Films, based in Mumbai, to co-produce a live-action feature film for the diverse hero. Vikramaditya Motwane, who directed his debut feature in 2010 and co-owns Phantom Films, has already signed on as director and is currently crafting the movie’s screenplay. Graphic India CEO and Chakra co-creator Sharad Devarajan will produce with POW! Entertainment’s Gill Champion and Phantom’s Madhu Mantena (Screen Daily).
Chakra was first seen on Cartoon Network two years ago, geared towards chilren. This new, live-action production will show the hero in his twenties and will take place in Mumbai. Stan Lee said this about the arrangement:
“I’m a fan of Bollywood films and am really excited about launching Chakra: The Invincible as my first Bollywood superhero movie.”
Devarajan had his own words to add, praising Lee’s lucrative characters, and sharing faith in the film’s director:
“With Vikram Motwane, we have been fortunate to find both a groundbreaking director and a passionate comic book fan, who will be able to create something uniquely Indian, but also authentic to Stan’s pantheon of superhero storytelling.”
