The Boston Celtics have waived backup point guard Phil Pressey. The 5’11” guard was originally signed by the Celtics on July 22, 2013. He didn’t get much playing time but made some decent contributions when he did get out there. During the 2014-2015 season, Pressey averaged just 12 minutes of playing time per game in which he produced 3.5 points to go along with 1.6 rebounds and 2.3 assists.
Boston really didn’t need his services anymore as they have plenty of very young, exciting talent holding down their back court. Even if Pressey had remained on the Celtics roster, he wouldn’t have gotten much playing time with the likes of Isaiah Thomas, Marcus Smart, Avery Bradley, and recent draft pick Terry Rozier out of Louisville all getting substantial minutes at point guard. Still, it’s always good to have as much depth as possible and owner Danny Ainge knows this. Following from Mark Murphy of the Boston Herald:
“It’s really tough for us to waive Phil,” said the Celtics’ director of basketball operations, reached shortly before the move was made. “He’s won over the hearts of his coaches, management and teammates.”
Pressey should garnish some interest once he hits the open market but there are no promises that he’ll get a deal. Plenty of teams need depth at the point guard spot but if Pressey can’t find a home for next season. he’ll probably either wind up playing overseas somewhere or in the D-League.
