The Boston Celtics have an incredibly busy offseason ahead of them personnel-wise, especially with the contracts of their two veteran leaders in Kyrie Irving and Al Horford both coming off the books. Instead, the Celtics are focusing on their core of the future consisting of Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown and Marcus Smart.
However, the Celtics have already managed to get better before the beginning of free agency thanks to a noteworthy addition to their coaching staff. According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, the Celtics have hired Kara Lawson as an assistant coach. Lawson played 13 seasons in the WNBA and also commentated Washington Wizards games last season and various matchups on ESPN.

Kara Lawson is an extremely bright basketball mind that should come in and bring a unique element to the Celtics’ coaching staff right away. Lawson will be the fourth female hired in any coaching role in the NBA, joining Becky Hammon of the Spurs, Lindsay Gottlieb of the Cavs and Jenny Boucek of the Mavericks.
Lawson was a standout during her decade-plus in the WNBA, playing for three different clubs and making the All-Star team once in 2007 and also earning a title in 2005 with the Sacramento Monarchs. Lawson averaged 9.8 points and 2.6 rebounds over her WNBA career. Her new position with the Celtics will officially mark her first professional coaching job.
