The Boston Celtics have an action packed summer ahead of them and GM Danny Ainge is fully aware of that. With 9 drafts in the upcoming 2016 NBA draft, and enough cap space to add some serious talent to an already developed Celtics squad. Now it’s time for Danny Ainge and his staff to work their advantages to the best of their ability and he’s already at work.
According to Chris Forsberg of ESPN, Danny Ainge sat down with WBZ-TV to talk the Celtics offseason and their roster:
“I really believe it’s an opportunity league. There are many players that are sitting on benches on other teams that are stacked with talent that just don’t get an opportunity. We have some on our team,” Ainge said on “Sports Final.” “We think [2015 second-round pick] Jordan Mickey has a bright future and [2015 first-round pick] Terry Rozier has a bright future and we’ve gotten calls from other teams about them that say, ‘Those guys aren’t getting an opportunity in Boston, we want to get those guys to come play for us.’ But we’re going to try to be patient with them as well, and other young guys.”
Jordan McKay and Terry Rozier haven’t really played much in their first year of NBA action, but they have both shown slight signs of brilliance and talent in late stints in the regular season and playoffs. This puts the Celtics in a tough position. Ainge is definitely planning meticulously for what is about to happen in Celtics land in this summer. They have enough picks to trade for a potential superstar or star player to help Isaiah Thomas and Avery Bradley . With the 3rd, 16th, and 23rd in the 1st round, and cap space of up to $20-25 million, the Celtics can target whoever they want at this point. There have been mentions of Al Hoford, Dwight Howard and even Kevin Durant having interest in joining the young Celtics team. Could the Celtics trade their picks for a Center like DeMarcus Cousins? Either way, the Celtics are trying to fill the position of a scoring big man.
