Another Star Trek series is coming to CBS All-Access. The streaming service has issued a two-season order for a new Star Trek animated series.
Star Trek: Lower Decks will follow the support crew who works on one of Starfleet’s least important ships. Rick and Morty writer Mike McMahan is developing the series for the streaming service. CBS Eye Animation will produce alongside Roddenberry Entertainment and Secret Hideout. Star Trek: Lower Decks will be the first animated series on the CBS All-Access.
Secret Hideout’s Alex Kurtzman released a statement regarding McMahan’s involvement. “Mike won our hearts with his first sentence: ‘I want to do a show about the people who put the yellow cartridge in the food replicator so a banana can come out the other end. His cat’s name is Riker. His son’s name is Sagan. The man is committed. He’s brilliantly funny and knows every inch of every ‘Trek’ episode, and that’s his secret sauce: he writes with the pure, joyful heart of a true fan. As we broaden the world of ‘Trek’ to fans of all ages, we’re so excited to include Mike’s extraordinary voice.”
Star Trek: Lower Decks will be the first Trek property with a truly comedic angle. It’ll be interesting to see how the comedy is balanced with the usual Trek high concept sci-fi adventures. If anyone can do it though McMahan can as he has mixed comedy and sci-fi on Rick and Morty.
Star Trek: Lower Decks will drop exclusively on CBS All-Access. The streaming service has yet to announce a cast or release date.
