Thomas’ hip injury became known after the Celtics were eliminated in the Eastern Conference Finals last season. It’s not immediately clear how serious the injury is; however, the reported concern from the Cavs would seem to indicate that it could be worse than previously thought.
Thomas was traded to the Cavs as part of a package that included Jae Crowder, Ante Zizic, and a first round pick from the Nets in exchange for Cavs’ guard Kyrie Irving. Irving had previously demanded a trade from the Cavs. Thomas is a free agent in 2018.
