The Cleveland Cavaliers are churning the end of their roster as the regular season comes to an end. They recently signed veteran forward Dahntay Jones after waiving DeAndre Liggins.
Now, according to Shams Charania of the Vertical, they are signing some reinforcements in the frontcourt. The Cavs will reportedly sign Edy Tavares from the NBA D-League’s Raptors 905. At 7’3″, Tavares will be asked to provide rim protection for bench units that have been bereft of them all year.
In order to clear roster space for the former Hawks’ big man, the Cavaliers will reportedly waive Larry Sanders. The former Bucks’ shot blocker was signed earlier this year to a two-year deal but spent most of his team getting reacclimated and conditioned in the D-League. Sanders only appeared in five games as a Cavalier, playing under three minutes per contest.
It’s clear that the Cavaliers believed they needed more immediate impact than Sanders could provide after being away from basketball for so long. Tavares, while not a big name, is a big body that can provide useful minutes as a backup five for a few minutes per game in the postseason. He has averaged 10.9 points, 7.7 rebounds, and 2.7 blocks per game in the D-League this season.
The Cavaliers are now focused on retaining their status as NBA champions. Larry Sanders will not be a part of that process.
