The Orlando Magic are in need of a new general manager and it appears as though they have their eyes set on David Griffin. The Cleveland Cavaliers’ GM has done a phenomenal job of surrounding LeBron James with talent despite being capped out. It’s no surprise then that he is the leading candidate to get the Magic job.
But before that can happen, the two sides must meet. And in order for that to happen, the Magic must receive permission from the Cavaliers as Gilbert is still under contract. Apparently, that’s easier said than done as The Vertical’s Adrian Wojnarowski reports that Cavaliers’ owner Dan Gilbert has been unresponsive to the Magic’s requests:
The Orlando Magic recently asked for permission to talk to Cleveland general manager David Griffin about their president of basketball operations opening, but Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert has been unresponsive to the request, league sources told The Vertical.
Griffin will become a free agent at the end of June so this could all be a scare tactic by Gilbert. By forcing the Magic’s hand, he can get them to hire someone else and take away a potential opening for his GM. If the Magic want to wait until Griffin is out of his contract to hire him, they would be going into the draft without a general manager.
That’s a pretty shady business tactic but it’s within Gilbert’s rights.
