It looks like ‘The Hunger Games: Catching Fire’ is still burning bright.
Lionsgate announced that the sequel sold 3.9 million DVD’s in its first week of release. This is the biggest launch in company history and had increased digital sales of 40% over the first ‘Hunger Games’ film.
The DVD had debuted at the top of almost every platform including iTunes, Xbox, Amazon, Comast Xfinity, Vudu, Google Play and Verizon FiOS.
“This is a monster opening and a tremendous result for the second film in a franchise, underscoring the enormous momentum of ‘The Hunger Games’ films,” said Ron Schwartz, Lionsgate President and General Manager of Home Entertainment Sales & Distribution. “With strong increases in digital revenue and Blu-Ray accounting for 50% of packaged media sales, the opening weekend performance is driving significant margin growth and is a testament to the strength of the franchise.”
‘The Hunger Games: Catching Fire’ has grossed $424 million domestically at the box office just beating its predecessor’s $404 box office gross. This is the first time two films in a franchise have grossed over $400 million each.
The final installment of the franchise, ‘Mockingjay’, will be split into two parts and will hit theaters on November 21, 2014 and November 20, 2015 respectively.
