Carmelo Anthony is questioning his decision from two summers ago to re-sign with the New York Knicks. At the time, many thought that he would sacrifice a bit of money in favor of signing with a contending team, like the Chicago Bulls. Instead, Melo re-signed with the Knicks for a deal worth more than $120 million over 5 years.
Now, Carmelo finds himself on a New York team that sits at 28-41. He spoke a bit about the situation that he’s in after Wednesday’s 121-85 loss to the Warriors. From Frank Isola of the New York Daily News:
“Even though we lost … got our ass kicked tonight, I hope this is not an indication of where we are as a team,” Anthony said. “I try not to compare, I’m not in the game of comparing but I hope this is not an indication of where we are as a team and we can bounce back and show the real team that we are and how we play against the Wizards coming up.”
…
“The ball is not in my court at this point. It comes to what [the front office] wants to do in the offseason. It’s up to them to make those decisions.”
In the same interview, Anthony reiterated that he has no plans to waive his no-trade clause but added, “I don’t know, maybe my loyalty has come back to bite me in the ass. As of right now, I am sticking to it.”
Losing is hard. It weighs on players, and it looks like Anthony is getting sick of it. You’ve got to feel bad for him, but on the other hand… this is what he signed up for. The Knicks were not a good team when he re-upped with them. He had the option to join a contending team, and instead he stayed in New York. Whether his reasoning was loyalty, money, or consistency(in terms of location), who knows? But what’s happening right now is what most predicted would happen. This wasn’t hard to foresee. Sorry Melo.
