It was reported a couple of weeks ago that Carmelo Anthony and LeBron James both had committed to playing in the Olympics for Team USA in Brazil this summer. After LeBron James immediately refuted that report, it became clear that Carmelo, along with his NBA brotherhood, aren’t certain about this years Olympics.
Carmelo has won 2 Olympic gold medals already with Team USA, basically the closest thing to an NBA championship celebration since Syracuse. The window for Carmelo Anthony is closing for a ring, despite him believing he can play productive for another 4-5 years. Melo still remains undecided about trying to earn his 3rd gold medal with Team USA. According to Michael Lee of Yahoo! sports & The Vertical:
“That’s at the top of the sport, of any sport. I think if you have the opportunity to do it, and enjoy it, and take advantage of it, I think you should do it. [The Olympics are] the throne for sports as a whole,” Anthony told The Vertical. “I’m going to take a little more time to think about it. I’m not in a rush. NBA season is still going on, so I’m going to see how I feel physically. Am I ready to take on – I don’t want to say burden, but – that load? If I’m ready, I’ll do it. If not, my body won’t lie to me.”
It’s understandable. When you’re at Carmelo’s age, you have to take care of your body right in order to maintain your athletic ability. It’ll be interesting to see what Carmelo decides to do. The New York Knicks are poised to have a busy offseason, and Melo’s made it clear that he wants to be involved in the decision-making. Melo will have to make his decision soon about chasing his 3rd gold medal.
