Team USA basketball had a few days off this week, and Carmelo Anthony — Team USA’s unquestioned leader — used his time off to visit Rio’s favelas, or shantytowns. He posted the above picture on his Instagram in reference to his trip to the favelas, calling them “comfy, cozy:”
The craziest part about Melo’s trip to the favelas is that they’re not exactly known to be the nicest part of Rio, and he went unaccompanied by security. This comes just three days after Ryan Lochte, among other USA swimmers, were robbed at gunpoint in Rio.
While in the favelas, Anthony made sure not to let his basketball skills get too rusty; he played some friendly pickup with the local kids:
