Cardi B won big at the 34th annual ASCAP Rhythm & Soul Music Awards Thursday in Beverly Hills.
The “Press” rapper received the ASCAP Songwriter of the Year Award. The award is given to a songwriter who, “has written or co-written the greatest number of most-performed songs of the year.”
Cardi accepted the award from ASCAP CEO Elizabeth Matthews and stated,
“I just want to say I’m very grateful. Sometimes I feel like I’m not doing too much because when it comes to female rappers, it’s like you’re never doing too much or they’re always pitting you against another female rapper.
She added,
“Sometimes I gotta see it and feel it for myself because it’s hard. Everybody always wants to say I made it because of this or made it because of that. I made it because I worked my ass off… Thank you very much, ASCAP. This is an honor for me.”
In addition to Cardi B, fellow rapper T.I. was the recipient of the ASCAP Voice of the Culture Award. Angela Rye presented the honor to T.I., who “has had a major influence on music and culture.”
Additional winners of the night also include ASCAP member and founder of Motown Records, Berry Gordy Jr., and current Motown President Ethiopia Habtemariam, who won the ASCAP Rhythm & Soul Heritage Award. View the full list of winners here.
