The Chicago Bulls have waived guards Rajon Rondo and Isaiah Canaan, the team announced via press release on Friday.
Chicago had been looking to trade Rondo, who’s salary would’ve become guaranteed on Saturday, but could not find a suitable deal.
The Bulls traded with the Timberwolves on draft night to acquire point guard Kris Dunn, making their need to have Rondo and Canaan no longer significant. The club is now determined to build for the future and acquire younger assets and picks.
Rondo played in 69 games last season with Chicago, averaging 7.8 points, 6.7 assists and 5.1 rebounds in 26.7 minutes per contest. He elevated his game in the Playoffs, helping propel his team to a 2-0 lead over Boston before going down to injury at the end of Game 2. Rondo was an NBA champion with Boston in 2008.
Isaiah Canaan appeared in 39 games off the bench last season, and held per-game averages of 4.6 points, 0.9 assists and 15.2 minutes. He shot 36 percent from the floor, marking the fourth straight season of shooting under 39 percent for him. Canaan was the No. 34 overall pick to Houston in 2013.
