Chicago Bulls and coach Tom Thibodeau have essentially left everyone waiting around for their next move. With eyes wide open, everyone in the media and fans alike both have been just waiting for that one tweet of ‘breaking news: Tom Thibodeau fired’ to come across a national reporters timeline to finally see an end to what has been talked about for months.
There has been rumblings of the Bulls willing to wait to fire Thibodeau when the remaining coaching vacancies are filled and even the likelihood of the Bulls not even wanting to take compensation to send Thibodeau to a new team.
Now it appears that the Bulls have reached their breaking point with the whole Thibodeau situation.
Following from Marc Stein of ESPN.com.
The Chicago Bulls are giving increasing consideration to firing coach Tom Thibodeau and absorbing the corresponding financial hit, according to league sources.
Sources told ESPN.com that the prospect of Chicago simply terminating its highly successful but often contentious relationship with Thibodeau, as the days pass, is growing in likelihood, even with nearly $9 million left on the coach’s contract over the next two seasons.
The reality, sources say, is that the Bulls believe there is little chance they would have to pay that whole amount, since league rules on coaching contracts would inevitably see that figure reduced by set-off provisions once Thibodeau lands a new job.
This needs to end already. Please. for everyone’s sanity. End it immediately. Firing Coach Tibs would be best for both sides. Just let the guy walk and decide what he wants to do with his life and future, don’t hold him hostage because of differing opinions on how to run a basketball team.
Where he would go would be very up in the air though. It appears the Pelicans and Magic are both moving forward in their head coaching searches so the only place that would remain for Tibs would be the Denver Nuggets, who seemingly have a rebuilding of their own going on.
Would Tibs be open to going back to the assistant coaching ranks and possibly join Doc Rivers staff? Well, only time would tell, but he could also take a page out of Scott Brooks’ book and just not coach at all.
