Cleveland Cavaliers starting shooting guard Iman Shumpert will become a restricted free agent once the clock hits midnight tonight, welcoming free agency which is always one of the most heartbreaking or joyous times for NBA fans. Shumpert played a key role last season for the Cavs after being dealt from the New York Knicks at the trade deadline. His addition along with J.R. Smith and Timofey Mozgov turned their season around and ultimately resulted in a run to the NBA Finals. According to ESPN’s Chris Broussard, Shumpert will also have several other suitors:
Sources: Lakers, Mavericks & Bucks interested in @I_Am_Iman (Shumpert). FYI: @KingJames is a big fan of Shump & his defense.

Broussard reported that the Dallas Mavericks, Los Angeles Lakers, and Milwaukee Bucks all have interest in the 2 guard. Shumpert isn’t the best offensive player but it’s a whole different story defensively. He is one of the elite perimeter defenders in the league today, something every team could use. The key part of the tweet is the part about LeBron. James reportedly loves the intensity and defense Shump brings to the Cavaliers. LeBron opted out of his contract and will also be a free agent come midnight. He told the Cavs front office that he will wait to see what roster moves they make before deciding upon resigning. Obviously locking up Shumpert for the forseeable future will be a good sign to LeBron and make it more likely he remains in The Rock N’ Roll Capital.
Dallas needs a starting shooting guard as Monta Ellis’ departure is most likely looming. Milwaukee is going to need some shooting to surround young studs Giannis Antentokounmpo and Jabari Parker. Whoever lands Shumpert this summer, whether it be the Cavaliers or someone else, they will have one of the best defensive weapons the game has to offer.
