With the Denver Broncos ready and almost fully committed to moving on from hall of fame quarterback Peyton Manning, as he also looks for a new place to play, the Broncos focus is now on resigning Brock Osweiler in free agency. But with all the money that was being dealt out to mediocre Quarterbacks, like Sam Bradford, the Broncos are looking to bring Osweiler on a significantly less than average contract, by starting Quarterback standards that is.
According to the Denver Post, the Broncos are set to to offer Osweiler a contract roughly over $12.27 million per season, which is similar to Los Angeles Rams Quarterback, Nick Foles.
Mile Klis of 9News in Denver reports Oseweiler has received an offer from the Broncos.
The Broncos have offered Osweiler a three-year contract proposal that is worth more than $45 million, NFL sources told 9NEWS. Osweiler can become an unrestricted free agent at 2 p.m. Wednesday. The market begins with a “soft” opening Monday where free agents can talk to other teams to gage interest and their value.
The Broncos’ $45 million-plus package includes incentives. Typically, some incentives are more makeable than others. It’s not known how much of the package is fully guaranteed, but still the offer could be deemed strong considering Osweiler has but seven NFL starts.
It’s obvious why John Elway hasn’t jumped to sign Osweiler just yet due to the fact quarterbacks like Kirk Cousins and Sam Bradford, who received huge guaranteed contracts this week. Smart move on the part of Elway, because Osweiler is bound to hit free agency and the Broncos don’t have a lot of money in cap this offseason and are still looking to get a long-term deal done with Von Miller. Elway seems to be just buying time to get Osweiler a contract that would best fit their cap situation.
Only way Osweiler doesn’t hit free agency, is if Elway and Osweiler’s agent is able to get a deal done before March 9th, when free agency opens. Another name to keep an eye on is Peyton Manning. It is reported that Manning and the Broncos were inevitably going to break up at the end of this season and Elway already gave indication that Osweiler was his guy for the future.
But if Manning is able to come back as a Bronco, it would on a significantly less contract than his current $19 million he’s supposed to make this season, as well as a lot less than the $12 million they will offer to Osweiler.
To say the least, John Elway has his hands full this offseason after winning Super Bowl 50.
