Brandy Haze is sheds the weight of a burdensome relationship throughout her latest EP, SAD GRL SZN.
The 14-minute emotional rollercoaster begins with the aptly titled record, “Scam Likely.” The Chino Hills, California native sets the tone for the project with a proclamation of sorts that lets every potential suitor know that her “heart is too pure” to let someone like her ex back into her life. “Scam Likely” is backed by tracks like “Gentle Lies” and “Limbo” that take a deeper look into all that she’s working to overcome after a failed relationship, including the impact of deceit and the need for post-breakup solitude.
The emotional toll that a failed relationship can have on an artist is not only explored through her descriptive lyrics, but it’s also represented by the diverse production offered by Txri Redd, Percy Allen, Minowaves, AC The Producer, Andrew Beckner and Autograph. The uptempo guitars of “Karma” allow the emerging vocalist to deliver what feels like a revenge track that could be played out with friends on the way to the club after a breakup. Meanwhile, the slow, soulful production of “Gentle Lies” feels like those moments when one is sitting down on their couch alone reflecting on all they’ve just been put through in their last relationship.
Through 14 minutes, the compact project serves as audible proof that pain can be channeled into dynamic expressions of emotion. The varied production, authentic lyricism and consistent vocal performances from Brandy Haze make SAD GRL SZN one of the stronger R&B EPs of the year thus far.
