
Illumination’s remake of The Grinch hit theaters this weekend, winning at the box office. The Benedict-Cumberbatch-led animated feature made $66 million in its debut, over twice as much as the second place movie.
Bohemian Rhapsody came in second at the box office this week with $30.8 million. That pushes its total just over $100 million stateside. The Queen biopic continues an impressive run despite mixed reviews.
Overlord released this weekend to the tune of $10.1 million domestically. Produced by J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot Productions, Overlord disappointed in its opening. But with strong reviews look for word of mouth to carry it to a better turnout in coming weeks.
Coming in fourth this week, Disney’s Nutcracker and the Four Realms pulled in $9.5 million. After its second week, The film’s total is now up to $35.2 million, still a far cry from the $120 million budget, even with the extra $60 million from international markets.
Rounding out this week’s top five, Clarie Foy’s The Girl in the Spider’s Web pulled in just over $8 million, barely beating out A Star is Born. The Bradley Cooper film has had sustained success since releasing in early October, its box office total now over $175 million.
