A bumbling news reporter is no match for a fire breathing dragon at the box office.
‘The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug’ scorches the competition this week as the film pulled in $31.5 million over the weekend. This brings its total to a hearty $127 million. The sequel still lags behind its predecessor ‘An Unexpected Journey’ which had a second week total of $150 million.
‘Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues’, which was released last Tuesday, earned $26.8 million during the traditional weekend and $40 million over its five day release. The sequel fell a little short of the original which grossed $28 million back in 2004 and grossed $85 million over its box office run.
In third place this week is Disney’s animated family film ‘Frozen’ which took in another $19.2 million. The film has now netted $191 million and universal praise from critics.
‘American Hustle’ netted $19.1 million in its first week in a wide release. The 70s inspired con film had a limited release last week in the United States.
Rounding out the top five is another limited release film ‘Saving Mr. Banks’ which earned $9.3 million. The movie will certainly fair well next week with families hitting the theaters for the holidays.
Christmas Day will see the release of ‘The Wolf of Wall Street’, ‘Grudge Match’, ‘The Secret Life of Walter Mitty’, ’47 Ronin’ and ‘Justin Bieber’s Believe’ which all hope to take the top spot at the box office.
