Once the Christmas lights are taken down and the snow has settled, ‘The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug’ still ruled the Christmas box office for a third week in a row.
The fantasy film took in $29.8 million over the busy Christmas week. This brings the film’s total horde to a whopping $190.3 million.
Just behind ‘The Hobbit’ is Disney’s animated family film ‘Frozen’ in second place which pulled in $28.8 million. The film is doing remarkably well by holding on to second place while in its sixth week at the box office. It positioned itself well as it virtually has no competition from other family friendly films.
Ron Burgundy and his army of anchormen take the bronze medal this week as ‘Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues’ earned another $20.2 million at the box office.
Staying put in fourth place is ‘American Hustle’ which danced its way to $19.6 million in its second week in wide release. The film brings its domestic total to $60 million.
Rounding out the top five is ‘The Wolf of Wall Street’ earning $19 million over the traditional three day weekend. The film took in $9.15 million on Christmas day alone and a total of $34.3 million over its five day release.
This year is set to be the highest grossing box office year ever by surpassing 2012’s total of $10.8 billion.
