Its good to be Kevin Hart and Ice Cube.
Their new comedy ‘Ride Along’ took the top spot and smashed box office records this week as the film earned $41.2 million. The Kevin Hart and Ice Cube comedy is the largest Martin Luther King Jr. Day opening and the biggest debut in January history beating out the previous record holder ‘Cloverfield’ back in 2008. The film which cost $25 million to make, doubled its budget within its first four days. Franchise anyone?
Last weeks winner, ‘Lone Survivor’, was knocked down to second place by earning $22 million and brings its domestic total to $74 million.
Open Road Film’s first animated film ‘The Nut Job’ had a nice weekend at the box office earning a cool $20 million. The film undoubtedly profited from families who were tired of seeing ‘Frozen’ countless times.
Trailing behind animated squirrels is late Tom Clancy’s CIA operative hero ‘Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit’ which pulled in $17 million. The movie cost $65 million to make and could still turn a profit in the coming weeks.
Rounding out the top five is ‘Frozen’ which gained another $12 million.
‘I, Frankenstein’ hopes to crash ‘Ride Along’s success as its the only new wide release next weekend.
